la_rainetteIt was colder in Toronto than in Iqaluit yesterday. At least that’s what my radio said and how my hands felt (as I was unable to locate my gloves in the morning).
On Thursday I had my parents-teacher interviews, which means that I spent a full 12 hours at school with a grand total of 40 mn of downtime to eat.I was tired but not grumpy, as I love my new school and my kids, so I decided to give us all some well-deserved downtime. The kids engaged in various fun activities and I sat down with them to draw, read, play, invent small science experiment, etc.
At noon, nobody wanted to go outside.
I know some of them absolutely NEED to run and also I have my own needs, like, I don’t know, GOING TO THE BATHROOM more than once a day and also eating lunch, so I told them all to go outside anyways. I’d go and have lunch and they could meet me by the door in about 15 to 20 minutes. I ate quickly and grabbed my coat, figuring I’d have to walk through the yard to find them, but sure enough, a tight little group of kids was waiting for me by the door. I was greeted with enthusiastic yells of MADAME RAINEEEEEETTE, hugged and high-fived by all of them as they trampled back into the warmth of the school.
In the classroom, they huddled in small groups and hid in corners to do Mysterious Things, and by the end of that day I was presented with several love letters and a crown.
I nearly teared up when I read their sweet words, and then shed an actual tear of joy when I realized that while their spelling was creative at best, they had freaking CHECKED THEIR GRAMMAR on the conjugation reference chart that I I keep pointing them to when they make mistakes and their verbs were impeccable.
And then I laughed at myself because OMG Rainette that is SUCH a teacher thing to do.
