:D Heee.
So: here are a few answers.
If you would like to be interviewed, please leave a comment in my journal. I will then ask you 5 questions. Post the answers in your journal, and invite your friends to do the same.
Oh, yes: and have fun :D
1.Assuming Sam's idea of a literary brothel was real, who would you choose and why? (The brothels allow you to choose any literary figure you'd like. Authors are included.)
Hah! There I sit, boggling and wondering whom I should pick. *g* I have no easy answer for this one: Remus Lupin would be one, if I didn't have doubts on his sexual inclinations; Roland of Gilead (from the Dark Tower series) would be another. Actually, any of the Dark, Misunderstood But Deserving types would suit me because they appeal to my mother instincts. (yes, pathetic, I know).
Oh, alright, come hither Roland of Gilead. Let me give you a good backrub (innocent smile).
(I have a nagging feeling at the back of my brain that the obvious answer is just going to jump out from behind a tree any minute now and hit me on the head with a great big hammer. If it does I'll let you know, OK?)
2.- What's your favorite thing about being a mom?
Oh, that's easy: the love. The times my girls take me in their arms, and hug me tight, and tell me how much they love me. But even more, being literally swept away by the tidal wave of love that you feel when you are a parent. I don't believe I had ever experienced a love like that until I was a parent - and I don't think it has anything to do with biology, I remember once hearing a woman talking about her adoptive son, and her words were those of a loving mom. It's very giving, very pure, very free from expectations - at least for me.
It is also totally heartbreaking: I hug my little one, and she kisses me and giggles in my ear and I have tears in my eyes, each time. It is a love that leaves you open and vulnerable - you see them struggling with unfairness and your heart weeps for them, because you would like to protect them and you can't, they have to learn for themselves.
It is a grouding love, too, and anchor in one's life. I am as irreplaceable to them as they are to me. The bond is very strong. Does that make any sense?
3.- What, if anything, do you miss about France?
:D Well, being away from the friends and family is very sad at times like birthdays, Xmases, etc. What I struggle with on a daily basis, though, is the food. So I have finally managed to find good chocolate, good cheese, good almost everything... But Berthillon ice cream, I do miss.
Berthillon is a small family operation in Paris, they make the best ice-cream and sorbets in the world. I was once there while they were making tangerine sorbet: I vividly remember the many crates of tiny Corsican tangerines - the best, the most richly flavoured, but man, peeling them is hell! - , and the 10 people working on them, and how the whole shop smelled like tangerines: heavenly! They take only 100 orders a day before Xmas, max, on big ordering pads (they don't have computers, are you nuts?), they have never heard of credit cards and they close downs for a whole month in August. When they go on vacation, and Paris suffers and sweats in silence...
Also, baguettes: come on, people, give your freshly baked baguettes a chance and do not put them in a bag! It makes them go soft instead of crispy - not good for them.
4. How did you meet your husband?
:D He hired me.
He used to work for this American company that had a tiny subsidiary in France, just 2 people, and they needed one person with computer skills to do European support (don't laugh! I used to be very good with SGML. Also, I was doing all Europe so speaking 3 languages was an asset). So they hired me.
When we started going out, there was this awfully awkward period when we tried to keep it extra quiet (I thought it was in case it doesn't work out, which was fine by me; but actually Husband was worried about how it would be received in America. I mean, he had hired me and was technically my boss...). And, well. Much later, we found we'd been running after each other all our lives: we'd lived in GB at the same time, then in Paris, and finally met in the South of France, where I'd followed - someone else. I left my job in Paris to follow a boyfriend down to the South, and when we separated one might have thought the whole thing had been a dreadful mistake that had cost me a very good job, only without that mistake I would never have met husband. Life has - interesting detours. ;)
5. What's something about yourself that you love?
I'm not judgemental. I can understand a lot about individual human behaviour, and I don't judge people. I like that about myself, a lot. It takes a lot to make me judge someone negatively. I am convinced, deep down, that no-one, no-one has the right to find him/herself superior to other people. And I love it that this is not a thing I say, but something that comes from deep down and is absolutely obvious to me.
On the other hand, I have to admit that I have little patience with people who do think themselves superior to the rest of the world. :D
1. Depuis quand est-ce que tu habites au Canada?
We moved to Toronto on October 26th, 2001. Froglet was 2 1/2, Tadpole was 8 months old... A big change, but I'd always had the dream to go live in Canada, and I'd given up because it was so complicated. And then it just... happened :D
We were more than ready to move, also because I've been lucky enough to grow up in a bilingual environment (mom is German) and I am so grateful to my parents for having done that for me. I wanted to give the girls a similar chance.
2. Qu'est-ce que vous manque le plus, quand tu penses à la France?
Patty's asked that too (Berthillon ice cream...), so do you mind if I tell you what I miss less? :D
In France, butting in line is national sport. I can't stand it. Being half-German, I like my lines to be respected. Also, I try to mind others and go by the "do not unto others" rule, so it drives me nuts. So what I miss less, is people butting in line, all the time.
3. What is your very favorite thing to cook?
Nougat glacé, with coulis de framboise :D Because it's simple and always a great success - also, one of my favourite dessert. And also, fresh madeleines and cookies. Because it's fun to bake with the kiddies... I always make sure it's extra fresh, cos they eat some dough raw. And madeleines, yum!
Basically, what I like cooking is what I like to eat, and I have one hell of a sweet tooth :D Also, it is an almost zen-like experience: I follow the recipe and relax into it. I use it as a break from - thinking! :D
4. What is your greatest hope for Froglet and Tadpole when they are all grown up?
That they are happy. I used to say to my mom, "kids don't owe their parents anything!" and she'd say, "well: wait until you have kids!" Truth is, I have not changed my mind. Whatever I do for them, I am happy to do and it is my choice. They don't owe me anything, except, perhaps, to try and be happy. Because I'm doing my damnedest to help them to be happy.
i want them happy, with a job they love - because I believe it is one key to happiness - and a life-partner they love - ditto.
Goodness. I have enormous hopes. :D
5. I would like to send you things from Zingerman's! May I?
Oh, by all means! This is so nice of you! *is enormously pleased*
I have no idea what Zingerman's is (I'll have a look, because I am as curious as any cat), but thank you so very, very much! I am very touched. :D
1.- Why do you keep a LJ?
I started because I had been commenting on Sam's journal (copperbadge), back when he was trying to have a character of his speak French. Then I started commenting and soon was bored with commenting anonymously, so I went for it. I had no idea what it would be, or even if I would update (or just comment at other people's pages), and then I started writing about the girls and it was so much fun...
I like it. I have fun writing it. I like the people I have met here. The one comment I have against LJ is that it is too addictive. :)
Also, sometimes, things aren't that fun. Packing a tent under pouring rain, for instance, is not fun. It becomes fun when you think about how you will write about it in a light, humourful tone, though. LJ is a way to keep my sanity, sometimes, too...
2. Name three places you've never been but always wanted to go, and why
Tanzania: to see the animals, basically, go on a safari. I don't kow if I'll ever go, but I'd like to. Becasue the kiddie fake safaris aren't the same ;) . Florence and Tuscany, Italy. I haven't been much to Italy, even though I adore the country. For the culture, the churches, the museums...
And anywhere beyond the polar circle, in the summer. To see the sun at midnight...
3.- Where is your favorite place to go to de-stress? Why do you suppose it has a calming effect on you?
Hum. The kitchen, I guess. Baking has a special calming effect on me, so I bake. Else...
Oh yes: the bedroom, our bed: if I wait there 5 minutes, the girls come over and we have a tickle party, that is a wonderful way to de-stress everyone. :D Point is, I have the kids with me everywhere, so leaving the house to de-stress is not really an option - it's more stressful in itself ;)
4.- Why frogs
:D Hah! Well, I am a frog, myself. It's funny, people over here are shocked when I say that, because it is apparently very derogatory. I don't see it that way - I am kind of reclaiming the frog :D I now have a frog mug, a frog keyring, and (obviously) a frog screenname.
A rainette is a sort of tiny, colourful tree frog. And I making a double statement with that name: 1.- I am a frog. :D 2.- it is rainette, not reinette. Many Frenchmen make the mistake, it's one of my pet peeves. So: for once, rainette gets spelled right. ;)
5.-What is your favorite poem? What emotions does it evoke for you?
It's a French poem: Demain, dès l'aube, by Victor Hugo. Hugo was very good at writing long sentences exsuding passionate feelings to the point of nausea, and then he wrote this one, simple, short poem. Tomorrow, at day break, I'll go to you. I know you're waiting. He wrote it in memory of his younger daughter who drowned in a freak accident. He never quite recovered.
There is so much grief in these simple sentences, so many deep feelings, that it simply breaks my heart. I have never been able to say it aloud - I always end up on the verge of tears and have to stop. It is very beautiful. It speaks even stronger to me now that I have two daughters of my own.
There. Done. Please leave comments if I may ask you questions, too. *is ready to pounce, even if pouncing may be delayed by various motherly everyday tasks*
Aslo, if you have done the meme, but I haven't seen your entry in your LJ, please let me know, I've probably just missed it because I didn't check LJ at all yesterday. I'm still happy to participate :D

Date: 2004-08-28 12:47 am (UTC)1. Only three? Oh. Hmm. 'Lirael,' by Garth Nix; 'Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins', by Emma Donoghue; and 'Jane Eyre', by Charlotte Bronte.
2. If I met G-d, I would ask G-d if G-d meant us all to seek enlightenment the same way, and what enlightenment means. I don't know what G-d would say back; I think that might make my head explode. But I would like to know.
3. "Pendant Mes Grands Vacances, par Selkie, 24 Ans" :) I would go to Ireland and Eastern Europe with my friends, some from the Internet, some from real life, and my son. Sonya and Joel, from real life, haven't seen the parts of Ireland I love; so the homecoming would be part of the vacation. And we'd go to the T'ien Shan mountains on the Russo-Mongolian border so that Sam could see enough sky, and the Hermitage so Em could drink in some Art, and Vilna and Torun so I could show everyone where I come from and -- well, eat gingerbread. Torun really does have amazing gingerbread. Tai can sneak some home in her cases. And we'd go to Rynek Glowny in Warsaw, Rainette, and stuff your children with the ridiculous cream-and-icing-and-chocolate pastries there. Also I'd buy them couture hats. Cute hats are indispensable at age 6.
4. My favorite memory is my earliest memory of swimming in the sea. I looked up through the water and everything was blue and gold. I think I was three years old.
My favorite piece of sentimental junk? Um, the graffiti'd piece of the Berlin Wall I won for an essay-writing contest in German, because of the words around the edge: "Freedom inside the mind helped bring this wall down".
5. I'm gonna be a misanthrope and say I love my cat best. That way if any of my family is reading this, I get in no trouble :)

Date: 2004-09-04 07:34 pm (UTC)My (french) friend Alice has described to me a family-run ice cream shop sounding similar to Berthillon, and she also says it is one of the things she misses most about Paris, so I had to run and ask her if it was the same place. Alas, hers is called Rabelais, but I'm beginning to want to go to France for the ice cream as much as anything else!
