Pitter-patter of little feet on the hardwood floors; silence as they reach the soft, thick carpet, in the stairs leading to the basement.

CLUNKKARBUNK!
rainette *freezes, gets ready to jump and rescue a hurt frogling*

Froglet: ow
Tadpole: Are you ok?
Froglet: Shhhhhhhhh
Tadpole: Are you OK
Froglet: yes, yes, yes
Tadpole: Oh, cat!
Froglet: SHHHHHHHHHHH!
Tadpole *bellows* OK, OK, OK
Froglet *hisses* silence!

Cat *runs away*

Froglet: one... two...
Tadpole: THREE! *jumps waiting rainette* BOOH!
Froglet: BOOH!
rainette *jumps obligingly* Oh, dear! What a surprise!
Froglet: Did we scare you, mommy?
rainette: Oh, yes, sweetheart.
Froglet and Tadpole *beam*
Froglet: Come on, Tadpole, let's surprise mommy again!

rainette *bravely holds on until the girls are out of earshot, then dissolves into helpless, nearly silent laughter*

Lovely. Kids have a different set of ideas they use for logic-- like baby birds: when you peek into a bird's nest the babies SHUT THEIR EYES so you can't see them!

Your "surprise reminds me of playing hide-and-seek with my little (3-year-old?) cousin, ages ago. We all pretended not to see her , "found" everyone but her, and finally lapsed into a pretended puzzlement: "WHERE'S Jannie? I don't see her anywhere..." till she responded "Tra la la-- here I AM-- in the WEEDS!"
