The lady in the tea shop smiled kindly at him as she re-filled his cup of tea, even though the shop didn't offer free refills. Remus tried to smile back, but wasn't sure he managed it. He was so tired he didn't think he'd notice if she started dancing on his table. His stomach rumbled loudly, a sure sign that it had been far too long since he'd eaten anything of substance, and Remus took a long drink of tea in an effort to calm it.
"Happy Birthday to me," he whispered miserably.
Moments later, a small pate with a piece of cake on it appeared in front of him. On the cake was a lone candle, already burning brightly. Suprised, he looked up into the kindly eyes of the waitress. She smiled.
"Go on then, make a wish." She urged.
Remus considered this. He had stopped wishing for things years ago, had stopped believing they would ever come true. But... just this once couldn't hurt. And the waitress was being so kind. Remus blew the candle out.
Two weeks later an owl bearing the Hogwarts crest flew through his window, and Remus remembered the lovely waitress and her wishes, and thanked her.
