Book meme!
May. 20th, 2005 11:38 amCos Ally said I had too :D (BTW, Ally, I'm glad you're enjoying Snow!)
1. Total number of books owned?
*takes deep breath* I counted 1,000.
Well, not really, I just counted one shelf, and then I did the maths, and it amounts to about 1,000, maybe a little more. I am slightly peeved, because I thought I had more books, but then, most of my French books are still at my mum's, waiting for me to come pick them up. Eh.
2. The last book I bought?
Saturday, by Ian MwEwan. Because Atonement really blew me away. But I haven't read it yet -- my library is full of books I want to read, but can't find the time to read, because I am in a booclub, so I end up reading books I wouldn't have chosen to read in the first place. Sometimes, it's a very good thing, cos it gets you out of your routine of authors you read all the time. Other times, it's a pain in the butt. But I really like the people in the club, and the meetings are fun. So.
3. The last book I read?
Madame Proust and the Kosher Kitchen, by Kate Taylor. For the bookclub, of course; it is a book I may not have picked for myself, but I am happy I read it. A good, fast read, that really spoke to me, with a few pages that really rocked my socks. The ending was a little lame, though, compared to all the rest. Still: a good read.
4. Five books that mean a lot to me (i.e. books I must have with me wherever I'm loving -- the ones that will be packed last when I move, or possibly go in my suitcase)?
Wow. That's tough.
Pot-Bouille and Au bonheur des Dames, by Emile Zola. The first one because of the hilariously cruel satire of the French bourgeoisie; the second because it follows the first so beautifully, and because Zola is the king of French realism. These two are the only French books that actually made their way from my mum's library back in France to Toronto. I have read them countless times, and I am not done.
A Fine Balance, by Rohinton Mistry. Because it breaks my heart and restores it to grace at the same time. So much light, so much sadness. Go read it if you haven't.
East of Eden I read it in French first, and then I found an English version, and then I lost it so I bought it AGAIN :D Which is how Tai happened to inherit the first one when I actually found it (cos it was inna moving box).
OK, so that is one more left to pick, and I have quite a few candidates, crap.
OK, so I'll be taking Les Particules Elémentaires, by Michel Houellebecq. That book tilted my world to the side a little. I am still not sure that I have gotten everything that I was supposed to get out of it, so it intrigues me to find out more. I truly dislike the author, who seems to be an arrogant prick. That book provoked a huge controversy, with people argueing back in forth, some saying that it is utter trash, others hailing its greatness (and my mum saying "she will never read it because there is too much sex" *is amused*). Well, it's not trash. Beyond that, I am still undecided; but see, I read it twice already and I am still actively thinking about it. A very interesting book for sure.
5. Tag five people and have them fill it out.
