Rainette and her girls are picking raspberries. Rainette's basket is filling up nicely when all of a sudden she realizes that the girls have stopped picking. They are huddled together, looking at something and whispering urgently.

Upon closer inspection, they are looking at one splendidly ripe raspberry.

rainette: well, don't just stand there. Pick the rasberry.
Froglet: But mum. There is a creature on the raspberry. A creature that can't fly.

Rainette's eyes open wide in surprise -- not that she didn't expect to find ugly bugs in the raspberry trees, but she never thought her daughter would have the, well, curtesy to call them creatures, and not ugly bugs. Which is what they actually are.

rainette: well, blow on it! It'll fall off, and then you can pick the berry.
Froglet *scandalized tone*: but MUM! What if the creature's mummy put it there? What if she can't find her baby! She would be so sad!
rainette: OK, OK, OK. Just leave it there, then.
Froglet: right *lets go of twig*

twig *swings elegantly back, thus unceremoniously catapulting the wingless creature into the Great Beyond*.

Froglet *blinks*
Tadpole *blinks*
Froglet: whoops
Tadpole *wibbles*
Froglet *soothing voice* It's OK, Tadpole. I bet its mummy was already dead, anyhow.
rainette *wibbles*

I blame Walt Disney Pictures, again, for making a Mum's Death an inevitable event in every average childhood. If I had the guts weren't so lazy, I would sue them for traumatizing me my kids so much.

Also, we're having homemade nougat glacé for dessert tonight, hence the icon. It's I spleam season.

Another friend posted a couple of days ago that a tiny frog somehow got into her house, so she caught it and got her boyfriend to drive her to a canal, where she released the frog into the wild. As she watched, a snake surfaced, saw the frog, and promptly ate it.

Sometimes all our efforts to preserve nature just don't work out...

P.S. Maybe this is a story that shouldn't be shared with Tadpole and Froglet?

*cracks up* No, I won't tell them! It's like that scene in Madagascar, when the duckling gets eaten by the crocodile (I put my hand on Froglet's eyes, cos Sam, who had already seen the movie, had WARNED ME, and good thing he did, cos she would have bawled her eyes out)

LOL! Brilliant - this made me chuckle a great deal :D But I hope the girls weren't too traumatised. What's the latest Early Mum Death (tm) ? I haven't seen any Disney films lately...

Well, we see them on DVD, so it's not a recent one: I believe the last DVD we bought was Bambi (and of course Bambi's mum dies).

You know, it has taken my own kids to make me realize that Disney doesn't actually like Happy Families much: parents are always dying, or briging up lost kids belonging to completely different species, children are abandoned/killed/orphaned, lost in deep scary forests, and what have you. it's very traumatizing, really.

I think Bambi was my the first film I ever saw at the cinema (it must have been a re-release, I think); I remember the Mum Death being very distressing. But I suppose it's par for the course in childrens fiction in general, when you think about it... I mean, a certain boy wizard has an appalling time of it ;) Not to mention most fairy tales - Hansel and Gretel isn't a stroll in the woods, that's for sure!

It's a wonder that we don't all turn in to disturbed individuals, really :D

Oh yes, that's very true. And "le petit poucet", too (who gets abandoned by his parents ON PURPOSE). German stories are the worst, though, but I remember that as a child, they fascinated me completely. The more horrible, the more fascinating for kids.

Huh.

Your kids never cease to amaze me. But mostly amuse me. *g*

(also: hurrah for i spleam! its gotten quite hot here)
