So I emailed the chemistry teacher, and because he is a really cool nerd I took the time to compose a Nice Email congratulating him on the elaborate system he created to keep students in line.
He replied a few minutes ago:
Ce système a un effet dissuasif très efficace. Il y a dorénavant très peu d'absents les jours de test. Les portes de l'enfer sont hermétiquement closes et aucune vapeur délétère ne s'en échappe.
That last sentence is particularly beautiful. It could be translated as follows: the Gates to Hell are now hermetically sealed, no noxious fumes can escape them.
I had pretty cool chemistry teachers in my days, but none of them were quite that cool.
